In this sermon from Matthew 5:31–37, we continue through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount as He addresses two deeply personal and practical areas of life: divorce and oaths. Jesus confronts the tendency to treat covenant commitments casually and exposes how the condition of our hearts is revealed through both our relationships and our words. In a culture of loopholes, broken promises, and carefully crafted appearances, Christ calls His people to something different—faithfulness, integrity, and truthfulness that reflect the character of God Himself.
Big Idea: Christians reflect Jesus through faithful commitments and truthful speech.
Through this passage, we are reminded that disciples of Jesus are called to be people whose marriages, promises, and everyday speech display honesty, humility, and covenant faithfulness.
