Today, we pause to remember one of the most significant movements in church history—the Protestant Reformation. On October 31, 1517, a German monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, sparking a gospel renewal that would spread across the world.
The Reformation wasn’t about starting something new—it was about returning to something sacred and essential: the authority of God’s Word and the centrality of The Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a rediscovery of grace, a recovery of the truth that we are saved not by our works, but by God’s unmerited favor through faith in Christ alone.
At the heart of the Reformation are five foundational truths, often called the Five Solas (Latin for “alone”):
- Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone
God’s Word is our ultimate authority in all matters of faith and life. (2 Timothy 3:16–17) - Sola Gratia – Grace Alone
We are saved by God’s grace alone, not by anything we can earn or deserve. (Ephesians 2:8–9) - Sola Fide – Faith Alone
Salvation is received through faith in Jesus Christ, not through our good works. (Romans 3:28) - Solus Christus – Christ Alone
Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man; our salvation rests entirely in Him. (1 Timothy 2:5) - Soli Deo Gloria – To the Glory of God Alone
All of life and salvation exist for the glory of God alone. (Romans 11:36)
These truths are not relics of the past—they remain the foundation of our faith today. Every song we sing, every sermon we preach, every act of service we perform is grounded in these gospel truths.
As we reflect on the Reformation, may we give thanks for those who courageously stood for truth and renew our own commitment to live for the glory of God alone.
